Maiden race for GP42 Zurich leaves excellent impressions

The first ever Spanish GP42 boat, Jan Santana's GP42 Zurich, had her maiden racing experience this weekend in Barcelona. The brand new boat took part in the Trofeo Zegna from Friday until Sunday and was helmed by the Spanish up and coming young match racer Manu Weiler.

Being the only Spanish GP42 to be sailing (all other units are still under construction) it was obvious the GP42 class did not race on its own. As a result, it is impossible to make any comparison and the assessment of its performance is only indicative. The class in which GP42 Zurich raced included various Grand Soleil 40, 43 and 45.

Still, the first impressions are excellent. According to Weiler the boat is fast and has an excellent feeling even in very light conditions. Unfortunately, Barcelona was also plagued by light winds. Friday's races were cancelled due to lack of any wind at all, Saturday races took place in a range between 4 and 7 knots and only on Sunday did crews enjoy acceptable conditions with the breeze ranging between 12 and 15 knots.
