Copa del Rey - Day 2: Mutua Madrileña wins first race

With the enormous emphasis placed on starts Mutua Madrileña were not in the best position at the beginning of this second race in the Breitling MedCup Copa del Rey event. But as they had to duck down to get to the right of the course, this played to their advantage and there were able to benefit from the windshift to the right allowing them to get to fourth place at the first mark. From there Ray Davies' excellent tactics and the crew's boathandling skills ensured that remained in the top pack chasing down Santa Ana.

Santa Ana started the race from more or less the same place as yesterday's opener and they were soon in a good lane and were able to take early advantage of the wind shift. An early gybe on the first downwind leg proved to be their downfall. Mutua Madrilena on the other hand went right out to the layline and came in with good pressure making it to the bottom mark in first place. With Santa Ana now in a close tussle for second position with Rush Valle Romano, the way was clear for Breitling MedCup leaders to remain in the lead.

A good result for Artemis, the Russell Coutts-skippered boat, which despite a few boathandling issues with the Corinthian entry finished a very creditable fourth.

A bad result for Warpath which despite a good start were on the wrong side of the course when the breeze swung round.
