Torvar Mirsky wins 2007 Open de España

He is so young, he probably couldn't drink a beer to celebrate his victory if we were in the USA. We are talking about Torvar Mirsky, the up-and-coming young sailor from Australia that won the 2007 Open España on Sunday. The sailor from PErth is currently ranked 17th in the ISAF standings and won the match-racing event in Calpe, after a 1-1 draw in the final against Shosholoza's Ian Anslie. Mirsky was declared winner of the event having won the last race before the finals between the two.

Unfortunately, winds didn't follow on Sunday the patterns of the first 3 days of the event. Instead of good constant winds in a range of 12-15 knots, the breeze didn't appear before 1pm and when it did it stayed below 6-7 knots for the rest of the day. As a result, the semifinals and finals didn't provide the excitement of the previous days, clearly evident from the pictures.

The first race was very closely fought and leadership changed a couple of times, switching back and forth. Ainslie started with a slight advantage but lost it at the windward mark when Mirsky squeezed in. The Australian stayed ahead in the first run and second beat but at the windward mark it was Ainslie's turn to grab the lead. The South African won the race and

In the second race, Mirsky had a much easier task. Ian Ainslie practically handed victory to the young Australian before even crossing the starting line. Ainslie and his Shosholoza crew committed an error in calculating the time left in the prestart sequence and found themselves far away from the start. As a result Mirsky started with an advantage of 2-3 boatlengths and kept it till the end.
