Alinghi and BMW Oracle to meet on Thursday?

Related PDF Documents1. Letter from GGYC to SNG, dated April 17

2. Letter SNG to GGYC, dated April 14

The exchange of letters between the America's Cup Defender and Challenger keeps unabated. It was the turn of GGYC Commodore's to write his counterpart in order to work further on a possible meeting, to be held in Geneva next Thursday, April 23. The American team agrees on such a meeting and will be represented by its General Counsel, its Rules Advisor and a member of its design team.

This letter comes as a reply to the one from SNG, dated April 14, where the Swiss accepted the challenge set forth by the Americans and proposed holding the meeting on Thursday, April 23. In that letter, SNG's Vice Commodore did not make any mention to the issues on discussion during the meeting and asked the Americans to provide the custom-house registry of their challenging vessel as soon as possible, as required by the Deed of Gift.

In his reply, GGYC's Commodore fails to provide any detail on that issue but instead states that his team remains committed to a conventional America's Cup, on monohulls and with various teams.

Finally, it's interesting to know that the two team owners are also in communication in order to privately meet somewhere in Europe.

Yet the question is, will these meetings lead to anything?

You can read here below the latest letter. Both letters are also available in PDF format at the top box.

Dear Commodore Firmenich,Thanks for your April 14 letter suggesting a meeting at Société Nautique de Genève (SNG) on April 23. As you would know, Ernesto Bertarelli and Larry Ellison are in communication regarding meeting together in Europe at about the same time. However we are pleased to come to SNG as suggested to start discussions for the 33rd America's Cup.

Representing Golden Gate Yacht Club will be Melinda Erkelens (USA), GGYC Board member and BMW Oracle Racing General Counsel; Richard Slater (AUS), BMW Oracle Racing Rules Advisor, and Manolo Ruiz de Elvira (ESP), BMW Oracle Racing design team.

Your letter of April 14 notwithstanding, and as we indicated in our letter of April 7, we remain committed to a conventional, multi-challenger regatta in monohulls under mutual consent to be held as soon as practicable. We look forward to discussing this in full earnest.

Please let us know with whom Melinda should follow up the details.

Sincerely,

GOLDEN GATE YACHT CLUB

Marcus Young
Commodore

Brad Butterworth, Team Ainghi
Russell Coutts, BMW Oracle Racing

Seems like Crazy Larry is up the creek without a paddle ..... According to the GoD he has to name the registry of his boat. Which boat will it be, uncle Larry?

Ha Ha Ha .... looks like he screwed himself! Now the world will see whether Larry really wants a multi-challenger mono hull AC, or whether he wants to play with his big toy???

BOR is talking absolute bs.
One thing is what they say (lie). Another thing is what they really want.
BOR has never accepted a multichallenger proposal in the last 20 months and they won't accepte it now. Unfortunately they're absolutely commited to the DoG match.
Let's see which lie they'll use now to get what they want and blame the swiss...

8:50 POSTER ..... unfortunately you are exactly right! BOR has NEVER wanted anything else but the easiest way to maybe have a chance at winning the AC. That meant trying to eliminate the challenger (which they finally did with some fancy maneuvers in their own court system), and now BOR will NEVER allow other teams to enter. Their letters are pure lies, and they will at the end (again) put the blame on Allinghi that they will conduct a multi hull race between the two teams. It means at least 4 more years without teams from the rest of the world.

BOR has been terrible for the AC, and the misguided fans will soon wake up and see what BORs real intention has been all along: the easiest possible chance at winning the AC, either in the court of with the special boat that they built.

Funny thing now is that LE must choose. Its time to put down your pants, crazy Larry!

8:12PM, 8:50PM & 11:32PM - You guys are too funny.....LMAO.

8:12PM - pls read the Deed as the CHR is only needed "as soon as possible" You don't need one until you finish building & selecting your boat. All it has to do is fit the measurements givein in the Challenge. Heck, you can even do trials for selection if you wanted as per the NYSC order.

8:50PM - What MC Proposal are you talking about??? Oh, the 1 the poodles signed up for. Well thanks to EB/SNG that was never valid from day 1 regardless of what they thought they were doing. They wasted 21+ months for what???

Btw GGYC has stated MCMC then MCDoG or DoG since day 1. It's been EB/SNG who has stated it's only going to be a DoG. That's really funny as the NYSC order states the same a GGYC. Hmmm, seems SNG is telling the NYSC & the Deed they are wrong again. Really sad & what a waste of time & yes, the Swiss are too blame since CNEV.

11:32PM - You are the worse as who got found in breach of the Deed in NYSC? Yep, it was a whole cast of characters that followed EB/SNG/CNEV over the cliff. Busted in court, really sad. They only have themselves to blame & to thank the Swiss for their misery.

It will be the same for SNG only wanting the DoG. EB/SNG makes the poodles pay once again by going back to court & saying it's only going to be a DoG when the whole world is asking for a MCMC 1st. Again, it's really sad.

It is the same all the time with these comments. Anonymous BMWO and Anonymous Alinghi always bitching at each other.

Just except the fact that Alinghi Screwed up in the beginning which they admitted and Oracle have just followed the rule book.

Everyone does deserve their say, but these comments are getting stupid and repeating the same bullshit constantly.

We all know that Alinghi and Oracle are head to head in a battle and lets just leave it at that.

I am wondering what all the locals are thinking reading these comments. They must think the two teams are a bit wacko! Giving the AC a bad name anyway.

Why take sides? They are equally to blame for the whole cock up!

There is a current AC champion (the "defender") and 18 teams ("challengers") who all agreed on a protocol to conduct the next multi-challenger AC.

And then there is Larry Ellison who claims he has to fight a war on behalf of other teams (who were preparing for the 33rd AC). This man has stopped everything, has bullied his way through the court, so that he may have a chance at doing what he hasn't been able to do for years: win a regatta!

Unfortunately the rest of the world is (again) paying the price for American stupidity!

10:24 PM poster - makes a very good point: both parties made mistakes. Allinghi fessed up and they sat down with all the challengers, and together developed a new protocol.

BOR continued with their court room agenda and their confrontational approach.

That is the difference between the to parties. Too bad that now we will have to wait 4-5 years for the next AC

Based on reading some of the comments on here it would appear us Americans do not hold a monopoly on stupidity.

Whats not so stupid is the lost livelihoods of sailors, lost income to their families, the (lack of) economic impact from the AC on the area, the lost credibility with potential sponsors.

The damage is a lot more then just stupidity of two overblown egos.
