Alinghi's view on the latest developments of the 33rd America's Cup

Dear Alinghi Friends,

We would like to share with you the latest developments of the 33rd America's Cup.

Representatives of the yacht club's America's Cup committee and representatives of Golden Gate Yacht Club, Challenger of Record, met on the 23rd April at the Société Nautique de Genève, under the presidency of vice-commodore Fred Meyer.

During this meeting, SNG confirmed that they accepted the Challenge of the Golden Gate Yacht Club for the 33rd America's Cup and has informed the American yacht club that our team, Alinghi, will be ready to race their 90x90ft boat (as stated in the GGYC Notice of Challenge of July 2007) in 2010.

SNG also expressed its willingness for the challenger selection to be open to other teams and has encourages GGYC to do so by offering them more time for teams to prepare if necessary. In this matter, SNG has declared being ready to give more time to teams wishing to take part in a challenger selection series in multihulls. It was also stated that SNG would be flexible and ready to discuss other terms of the 33rd America's Cup such as race format, venue or calendar.

Confirmation that the 33rd America's Cup will be raced on multihulls is the consequence of the fact that SNG and Alinghi have been forced by the GGYC's challenge of July 2007 to build a multihull, despite of the fact our club and our team have been working hard with a group of challengers in the last two years to create an America's Cup that would suit the current global economic situation, i.e with a single boat per team. However, BMW Oracle Racing, representing Golden Gate Yacht Club, which has interrupted this process with legal procedures in order to become the Challenger of Record, has recently made a proposal to organise a Cup in 2011, presumably with two boats per team, therefore in total contradiction with the economical efforts decided by the 18 challenger teams and Alinghi.

Now Alinghi has built a giant multihull in Villeneuve on the shores of Lake Geneva where this boat will be launched soon. Huge efforts, both technological and financial, have been invested in this project. In the meantime, Alinghi sailing team is preparing for this exciting adventure and will be training and racing in Lake Geneva this coming season.

BMW Oracle Racing has also been training on their giant trimaran since summer 2008.

Once this 33rd America's Cup on multihull is over, if SNG and Alinghi win in their defense of the Cup, hopefully, we intend to welcome a new Challenger for the 34th America's Cup with who we will be able to organise a new event with the biggest amount of challengers and with limited costs to allow every competitor to realistically aim for victory.

We are proud of our colours and will do our best to defend them with flair and we rely on your support, for which we thank you, and we look forward to seeing you soon for the first sail onboard the new Alinghi multihull on Lake Geneva.

Kind regards,

Alinghi

OMG SNG/Alinghi are still in denial!!!!

"Confirmation that the 33rd America's Cup will be raced on multihulls is the consequence of the fact that SNG and Alinghi have been forced by the GGYC's challenge of July 2007 to build a multihull, despite of the fact our club and our team have been working hard with a group of challengers in the last two years to create an America's Cup that would suit the current global economic situation, i.e with a single boat per team."

1. The most important point & the starting point of the past 2 years is that EB/SNG/Alinghi keep denying is that SNG was inbreach of the Deed. The courts don't care what the poodles (challengers & others) thought about CNEV. Now the poodles admit CNEV was not qualified.

VO said it bestt - "Get lost Alinghi and the same goes to all those teams of cunning professionals who hypocritically supported him until now"

2. No one was forced to go multi's it was SNG's choice. GGYC offered since day 1 a MCMC 1st then 2nd MCDoG now forced into default DoG.

3. SNG says there are all these multi teams out there that want to do the CSS but where are they!!! What BS!!! GD got it right saying Alinghi is trying not the look as they are the villian but they are.

It's all about delay, delay as EB/SNG/Alinghi couldn't get on w/ accepting the legal aspects of the Deed. Nor could they build a DoG in 10 months nor could they afford to drop they suppose boat in favor of doing a MCMC which was GGYC's offer.

I really hope the NYSC on May 14 hands EB/SNG/Alinghi their heads as enough is enough!!!

Not much more to add to this! Very clear and concise! Instead of building one (economically feasible) boat of "normal" dimensions we will now be watching a spectacle that has nothing to do with an AC shared by all nations who wish to participate.
And that will be followed by another 3-4 years of waiting time until the next "normal" AC.

Its really too bad!

Bertarelli/Alinghi have completely stuffed up the Americas Cup....the sooner they're out of it the better

Get over yourselves everyone. That is the most positive letter so far. At least they are trying to fix what they know they stuffed up. Yes it isn't over yet but this is a start for some direction. I am looking forward to an event that isn't lead by over budgeted teams. At least this way it should be even for everyone.
I don't support either Alinghi or Oracle and I am not relying on the AC for my income. Just looking forward to the 34th cup as the AC is a cool thing to be involved with!

I thought the use of the term "poodles" had been banned internationally as a stupid, pointless and somewhat pathetic statement. lets hope the term never rears its ugly head in my local yacht club. Could you please, most kindly investigate a more well thought out slur to slot into your future pointless comments.

But that terms "poodles" is being used by the same "stupid, pointless and somewhat pathetic" crowd of Crazy Larry fans .... obviously delusionals who are exhibiting a total lack of brain activity. I think its cute how these people compensate for the lack of logic by using "big words".

Dont be too hard on the Crazy Larry crowd .... their brains aren't working very well, and they exhibit tunnel vision!

Watching a spectacle with two enormously expensive, fast, and technologically advanced boats is EXACTLY what the America's Cup is about. America's Cup is about pushing the boundaries of sailing technology and building the fastest motherf**ker boat in the world. America's Cup is not a regatta for anyone who wants to play, it is a challenge cup for the best racing yachts in the world.

If a yacht club can't play on that level they don't belong in America's Cup.

Paul - maybe that was the original tradition, some 80 years ago. Today, to be economically feasible, any major sports event needs multiple participants and international sponsors. And that's exactly what the AC will not have with only two entries by two extremely affluent people.

In that case its not a sporting event AC anymore, but simple a private competition to see who's got "the bigger one" .... :)

9:29 PM - the AC was never intented to be a commerical venture. Hopefully the Deed will stop anyone from going there....just like now w/ Enrievision

Btw if you are using the Deed/The Cup to make $ you better being filing your paperwork in the State of NY.

That was/is what the AC is all about. If you can talk to ghosts look up Sir Lipton and ask him yourself.

The AC is a one on one challenge Cup if the two teams involved cannot agree on terms. It would Uncle Larry and EB cannot at this time. So we will have a 1 on 1 as the Deed suggests. Or unless EB is stripped of the Cup first. This contempt filing is serious buisness. EB better cross his fingers on this one. Cahn's order was specific and the NYSC made it clear in their ruling that both sides better sort this by themselves. Beware of pissed off Judges. Especially ones that don't wear stupid powdered wigs. :P
