BMW ORACLE Racing present team and state-of-the-art trimaran ahead of February America’s Cup Match

[Source: BMW Oracle] In the first official presentation of the team since becoming the Challenger of Record for the 33rd America’s Cup, team owner Larry Ellison thanked his team for their dedication and promised to leave no stone unturned in their quest to win back the oldest trophy in sports for the United States.

To that end, the team also confirmed the trimaran it has been sailing in sea-trials, BOR 90, will undergo further testing and modifications before emerging as USA, the boat the team will use to challenge for the America’s Cup in six months time. CEO and Skipper Russell Coutts announced that helmsman James Spithill will be driving the team’s boat in the 33rd America’s Cup. The team will continue testing in San Diego until November.

In a day celebrating the team’s preparations to date for the 33rd America’s Cup Match, Larry Ellison encouraged his squad to keep developing the boat to discover the full potential it will take to win the head to head battle with the Swiss Defender.

“We are pushing ourselves to our limit and we’re discovering what the boat can do and what we can do as a team,” Ellison said. “If we’ve done our job well, we’ll go out and race this boat and the win the America’s Cup.”

Coutts, a three-time America’s Cup winner, noted how proud he was of his team’s accomplishments to date.

“The America’s Cup is an incredible challenge. There are so many factors just to get to the start line. This time is perhaps even more challenging than in recent history. But this is what makes this event so rewarding when you do achieve the goal,” Coutts said.

“It’s taken an epic commitment to date from our design team, boatbuilding team, our shore team, our support team and our sailing team. The sailing team is still learning what we have here. Everyone is excited and motivated and we are inspired every day by this unique challenge. Thank you for supporting us and we hope we are back here next year with the America’s Cup.”

Coutts and Ellison introduced the team to the 400 guests that included the media, partners and sponsors, team families, local dignitaries and sailing community friends. The public enjoyed the show from the adjacent public area behind the Convention Center.

Following the dockside presentation at the team’s San Diego base, a San Diego Harbor Police boat will lead the BOR 90 trimaran in a parade of boats to Point Loma. The replica of the 1851 Cup winner, the schooner America, which gave its name to the trophy, followed astern of BOR 90. The two boats represent 158 years of cutting-edge American nautical technology dedicated to winning the America’s Cup, the oldest trophy in sport.

Must be hard to present a boat you have been sailing for a year and everyone already knows it!

The whole thing sounds more cheesy than Alinghi's Swiss Day.

DOG and Pony Show

This was sent to us by one of the attendees at the BMWO "special event" who wishes to remain anonymous...

I was at the big BMW so called "amazing event" today and I can assure you it was anything but amazing. It was poorly attended, poorly run, and had almost nothing compelling about it. If this was their attempt to show the public or even the sailing audience what they are all about, I'm afraid all that was accomplished was to verify that sailing is little more than a third-tier sport. And in this case one run by a super wealthy megalomaniac who seemingly knows nothing about presentation, but likes to spend a lot of money on a large and strange looking boat that absolutely no one, except perhaps a few multihull sailors, can relate to.

Clearly BMW has lost their way. First, they wouldn't be designing cars that look like lumpy Hyundai's and second, throwing money away on this AC effort or this "amazing event." The only thing amazing was how unamazing it was. Fire hoses? The Old America? Harrison Ford was there. Nobody knows why. Ellison, Ehman, Coutts talked. Nobody knows what they said. And as far as I could tell, nobody cared.

Amazing would have been taking people out for a ride on the tri. Or set up a temporary road course and let us drive some of the new BMW cars around. Something. Anything but this. This was not amazing. Way to go, BMWO.

Alinghi will beat BMWO.
BMWO said that this was not the boat they were going to race. They lied just to buy time to not give their CHR thus basically cheating.
I hope BMWO loose badly or their crappy old boat falls apart.

weren't they crying because the fumes from the a5's motor hurt their eyes?
Oh that's right they were crying because it was the Swiss national day; The day was chosen because August 1st 1291 was the date on which three Alpine cantons swore the oath of confederation, an act which later came to be regarded as the foundation of Switzerland. The representatives of Schwyz, Unterwalden and Uri met on the Rütli field, high above Lake Lucerne, to swear a bond of brotherhood, and agree to act jointly if their freedoms were threatened by outside aggressors.
What a great PR move to present A5 on a day already loaded with significance!
Were there any immigrants in the crowd?
- just the core of the alinighi team.
THERE team!!!

Chocoa must have Googled and pasted the significance of First of August in Switzerland. Did you see the several hundred boats joining in the Alinghi 5 parade?

It must have hurt his feelings that the re-launch of BOR-90 on July 4, went totally unnoticed! Perhaps he didn't even notice himself ... and then ...

The parade on August 11 to celebrate the challenge could not even muster a dozen boats in the parade and that includes the harbor police! (To his credit Woody made it!)
