BMW Oracle's BOR 90 has dismasted

[Source: BMW Oracle Blog] UPDATE - 16:30 local time San Diego - The BOR 90 should be in around 17:00, with the support RIBs that have retrieved the mast a couple of hours behind.

Early indications are that the boat platform hasn't suffered much damage, but it will take time to do a full assessment.

The shore team is geared up to dig in to the job list right away.

UPDATE - 15:15 local time San Diego - All equipment has been secured and the BOR 90 is under tow and en route to the team base. The boat is expected dockside early this evening.

On Tuesday morning, during testing on the waters off San Diego, the BOR 90 dismasted. All of the crew on board are safe. No one was hurt in the incident.

Support craft were with the race boat at the time and are currently working to salvage the rig and get the boat back to shore.

The team is investigating the cause of the failure.

More information will follow.

Glad no injuries.

Going to be a good learning and recovery experience for BOR.

They always say they push the boat right to the edge when they take it out. Now they know where it is!

I can just see SNG using this dismasting in the NYSC to further their statement that Valencia in Feb is unsafe in these boats.

Finally - the US courts may favor the US team, but the US wind-god made clear that not everybody can side with the bad guys. Thank you. Now sink the hull guys (but get off safely and get real jobs).

I can just see GGYC using this dismasting in the NYSC to further their statement that they won't race in Feb in Valencia (or anywhere else) 'cause they need extra time.

Was Larry Ellison on board?
Oh, no... that chicken's never sailed that boat.
I guess the visionary entrepreneur saw this f*ck up coming!

May be it was done on purpose. Now they can legally switch to a wingprofile..................

just a thought

As an avid Alinghi fan I would caution all Alinghi fans not to tempt fait. Remember Alinghi broke their mast in training in Auckland just before the semis for the 31st AC and went on to win.

Does however show how quickly things can go wrong even in light breezes with boats of this size.

Good news that everyone is ok

I think we are getting to far here. Have you ever been sailing on a maxi? The forces involved in such a boat are massive.

I don't want to think about taking down a mast on purpose....way to dangerous, not only for the crew but also for the boat.

please let's maintain a bit of a level here.

Well - read this:

from bmw oracle blog:

Ian Burns,
the design team coordinator remarked, “Well, it's never nice to lose a
beautiful mast. ........ the new rig platform we were planning to use next week
was going to become our main testing stream. In that sense this mast wasn't
scheduled to sail beyond this week so it's possible it's only missed two or
three days of sailing in its life.”

no comment!

I think BMWOracle does not need to crash their rig in order to "legally" switch to a new wingmast configuration (what a strange suggestion anyway...). They are free to use whatever rigg configuration they wish to use as long as they are not sailing with more than one mast.
