Monsoon Cup - Day 2 - Flight 12: Ben Ainslie on top with 6 points; Mirsky comes back and wins Minoprio

The much-expected clash of the young guns, Torvar Mirsky and Adam Minoprio, took place in the 12th flight and Australia came out victorious, although it initially seemed the other way. The world's number one and two had an aggressive but uneventful start and Minoprio hit the line on the favored right side, holding a comfortable lead halfway up the first beat. Unfortunately for him a couple of unnecessary tacks gave the advantage back and helped Mirsky get the strong tide. Not only was Mirsky able to sneak in at the top mark but he also forced a penalty on Minoprio. From that point Mirsky was able to protect his lead and score a very significant point.

In the other matches, Richard and Ainslie beat Hazwan and Williams respectively. and are sitting on top with 6 points each. Williams, the two-time and defending world champion is having a really bad regatta and should be worried.

Minoprio has the right and is ahead but still two extra tacks in the first beat gave Mirsky the opportunity to pass him. Kuala Terengganu, 3 December 2009. Photo copyright Pierre Orphanidis / Valencia Sailing
