Report: Team New Zealand and Real Club Nautico Palma to enter 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race

According to the Spanish sailing website Gaceta Nautica, based in Palma de Mallorca, it appears that Team New Zealand and the Real Club Nautico Palma will enter the 2011-12 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race, joining their forces with the financial backing of the Spanish footwear company Camper, also based in Palma.

Always according to the same article, the final agreement was signed in Spain on Wednesday and the joint Kiwi-Spanish project will be presented in a press conference next Monday in Palma.

Finally, the author of the article states that Camper's financial investment will be "very high" and according to his own estimate it is approximately 20 million euros.

We will try to get official confirmation, or denial, as soon as possible. If it is indeed true, it makes sense because having Team NZ race under a Spanish flag was the only way for Camper to take advantage of the tax deductions the Volvo Ocean Race sponsorship benefits from in Spain.

Great News, looking forward to seeing these outstanding yachts in the Viaduct.

If this is TRUE...extremely disappointing that a SPANISH company and a SPANISH yacht club are supporting a NEW ZEALAND team. There are hundreds of Spanish sailors that are looking at putting together ambitious projects with SPANISH sailors (some of the best in the world at what they do) and they cannot even get an ounce of support.
So will we see Spanish sailors on this TEAM NEW ZEALAND boat ??? maybe a token one here or there - to save face. What a farce.

Sorry but who cares about regional nationalism ? Camper is a Company looking to expand its' brand. Guess they looked at the quality of advertising promotion that was available to them and chose soemthing that would get them the most mileage.Big deal.

If you want Nationalism then best stay with the AC ... at least while the CiC rules are still in existence ...

To anonymous 9:41pm... I doubt you would feel the same way if a New Zealand company was sinking 20 million euros into a Spanish Team with Spanish Sailors racing for a NZL yacht club for a race based and starting in New Zealand...
