Excuse me for being ignorant, but are these Audi-guys blind or just dilletantes. It is hard to believe that there can be another cause for such an unforced error!
KC
Probably not blindness, but a slow mainsheet hand. The mainsheet gets eased out bigtime in the first second or two of the clip, but it looks to me like it is too late and the rudder is already stalled.
That is what Schuemann implied with his statement and bring's it down to cause b. ;-)
Everyone who is involved in sailing knows that you cannot sharply bear away with a modern race boat that is powering upwind when you do not at least dramatically depower the main.
With just 10 boats on the racecourse and plenty of room to bear away or tack things like that simply cannot happen - especially when you consider that A1 is already powerreaching approximately 20° lower than upwind in the beginning of the film-sequence, meaning they had all the time in the world to consider what they were doing to avoid a collision (a fact that is acknowledged by Schuemann if I get him right).

STARBOARD.
