I wonder why nobody is mentioning Alinghi as potential challenger. They have an advantage since they did a lot of R&D for AC33.
Anyway Grant mentioned 5 teams... the media won't be happy...

alinghi already has the test platform. it's a matter of building a wing and ... voliá.

First up I concur that is a "must see" video; it's good to hear an informed & measured response from someone who knows what it takes to build and run an AC boat. I found the flat denial that this protocol will make it any cheaper especially interesting. I wonder how many other of yesteraday's statements of fact could be challenged too?

Content and hull arguments aside though, the absolutely unprofessional nature of the announcement by Coutts et al shocked me. I've seen drunken wedding speeches done with more polish!

If they truly want to target a new audience then I suggest making a bit more of a bang with any further announcements - can you really see F1, the NBA or FIFA announcing what are quite goundbreaking news rules in such an amateur way? Where was Fox News, U2, or a life size ice sculpture of the new AC72!?! If they really want to grab the attention of the "facebook generation" then that's the sort of stuff it takes.

Now I'm keeping everything crossed that Valencia bags one of the World Series Regattas...

Well - so long as they roll forward the personal income tax reduction scheme from AC32 and AC33, I'd say they have no problem at all.

Alinghi will not be back. They have no designers or engineers anymore. They have signed with BOR.

BMWO are leaving their Valencia base as of the 1st of November - so highly doubt they will be back in Spain anytime soon.

R.V.did not sign a BMWOracle contact.

Sorry to insist, but don`t miss the point. This is all about Oracle getting the advantage right from the beginning. The rest of the paraphernalia is just decoration to the decission.

Imaging just as an example that the AC45 that are about to get finished in December were obviously designed from March onwards at least, long before they had the consulations with all designers for that democratic process to choose the right type of boat. The decission was already taken and we wasted all our time at that meeting.

I almost prefer the abused by Alinghi than by BOR, the first one being at least a little more straight and predictable.

I agree with Grant Dalton, this will not attract more than a few teams. Then they will justify it like this: Less teams but really of a top level, like never before, best racing ever, top technology, bla, bla, bla..., and I would say: yes whatever, but less teams.

Yes, but if you want to morph the "brand awareness" of the America's Cup onto a new and improved product that suits your vision of a Professional Sailing League, the last thing you want is a whole bunch of lemon syndicates cluttering up the place with broken rigs and broken sailors due to poor funding and weak personnel.

Far better to cut those guys out and run with a quality programme that garners a new fan base all twittering their approval of the new product. Then the second hand gear can help bring a second tier of franchise holders for the following World Series AC Championship. All makes perfect sense you see.

Yabba Dabba Doo.

Less teams = killing the event. Also F1, boring "sport" they manage to have 10 teams.

20% off budget is just ridiculous in such economic crisis.

private money will as always finance teams, nobody can cover 100% of budget with sponsor.

event ETNZ has 3 private millionaires spending money for private purposes.

the last one who made the miracle (a campaign based 100% on sponsor was Cayard with AmericaOne)

i don't remember anybody else.

AC45 are at BOR costs to help the teams get ready whihle they are working on the AC 72. Also the AC 45 is being used to kick of the circuit for the AC before the AC 72 is ready

Basically it's a LV Series like with BOR once again supplying boats. What's wrong with that?
