Alinghi, the America's Cup defender, started yesterday their training in Dubai (see story here), taking advantage of the city's better wind and weather conditions during winter. The Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) provided the facilities where Alinghi built their temporary base, in addition to hotel accommodation and logistical support.
Given the importance of Alinghi's, not just for the DIMC but the whole city and region, AME Info, the Middle East's largest business news organization, interviewed the managing director of the club, Saeed Hareb.
Obviously, most America's Cup fans will not learn anything new or exclusive from the interview but the most interesting point is Hareb's - and undoubtedly the local government's - ambition to host the America's Cup in the future. Earlier this year, the DIMC played host to the ISAF Nations Cup Asia Regional Final as well as the Dubai Match Race Challenge, the first regatta of the brand new RC44 class.
According to Hareb it was Alinghi that approached the DIMC in order for the America's Cup defender to settle in Dubai during winter, unlike older times when the DIMC had to chase teams in order to convince them to visit the Emirate city.
