Ed Baird and Dirk Kramers talk about the day and Alinghi 5

Although in the city of Valencia and the first 2-3 miles off the breakwater conditions were considerably calm today, further offshore it was very rough. Ed Baird gives a very detailed explanation of today's "nasty" conditions. The strong westerly was causing strong westerly wind waves while the very strong north westerly offshore was causing a strong swell. Their combination forced the race committee to call off racing since both the boats and their crews would be in danger.

nasty, indeed. so nasty that optimists usually go out in such conditions. bunch of pussies.

What ever happened to seaworthy boats, kids race opti's in those conditions. What a farce!

Stupid comparision with the Optimist. It's a difference, whether a 2.3 m solid box with a tiny sail is tossed around or a 30 m long and 60 m tall highly complex overpowered multihull calculated at extreme upperlimit loads is shaken in a 3 m wave cross sea. We don't have to do with seaworthy multis such as Groupama 3. Think before writing.

Think about it... if they hit a wave badly, with a windshift... or whatever...
If someone fall of, if they go up side down... they have 30m free fall!

I dont think it's the safe that's thats the problem, but the area. Thanks BMW Oracle

Have finaly come to the conclusion that you are a jerk.
Why not stay in your hole and stop commenting on something you patently know nothing about.

So WetHog, I guess you're a good sailor. Would you then go around the world with BOR boat ? Hey, are you a good sailor or not ?

well, maybe you should think before writing. This is a non MC DoG race. If you want to compete at that level you better build a boat that can handle bad weather or go find MC with your competitor on a limit regarding weather and waves. If you have failed to build a solid boat and/or to negotiate the said limit you are simply poorly prepared for the race.
The fact that multihulls with a comparable size and power can handle bad weather would suggest that yes, technically it is possible to build such a strong boat.

@ 8:07 AM,

if all you can do is insult other people in this post I feel, it is perhaps you, who is the jerk. Why don't you share with us all your insight and knowledge instead of rantling around?

Jamie F and Wet Hog

My insight and knowledge tells me that the race officer posponed the racing yesterday not either of the teams. It also tells me that winning the AC requiers boats built to their limits for the expecterd conditions. Considering there has been uncertainty re the venue up until quite recently and well after both teams started their build programme it is quite acceptable that the race officer applies caution to his considerations on saftey.
Strikes me that you concur with RC's very credible view that the US Boat will have the edge in stronger conditions which of course explains the real reason they didn't like Rak.

God - please make this all go away. Thanks.

I'm a jerk and a know nothing because I feel those sailing for the America's Cup should be able to handle any wind strength and sea state thrown at them? Seriously?

I guess its not hard figuring out who those calling me names are rooting for to win AC33. The team sailing the white boat with two hulls that will "break in 1000 pieces" in a stiff breeze or waves over a meter high.

And I'm not much of a sailor, but if offered a chance to sail on USA-17 in wind over 15 knts and waves over 1 meter to win the America's Cup, I would take it in a second. I would be scared shitless, but I would go. Would you?
